The subject of the "Prayer to the Archangel Michael, the Terrible Governor of the Heavenly Forces" asks to be protected from the evil one ( deliver us from all the charms of the devil; cast away from me the evil spirit that tempts and torments me). The one who prays wants to be protected from all enemies, visible and invisible (forbid all enemies fighting with me, and make them like sheep, and humble their evil hearts, and crush them, like dust in the face of the wind; deliver us ... from the flattering enemy). He seeks to ensure his own safety in various life situations, which are listed in detail ( wake us an assistant in all troubles, sorrows, in sorrows, in the desert and on the seas a quiet haven; deliver us from the coward, the flood, the fire, the sword and the vain death, from the great evil).

But where there is no true repentance and self-abasement, there can be no proper prayerful mood. The search for the "Kingdom of God and His righteousness" () is forced out of the consciousness of the subject of prayer by concern for earthly things and fear of visible and invisible enemies.

One of the petitions of the "Prayer to the Archangel Michael, the Terrible Governor of the Heavenly Forces" sounds like this: Hasten to help us and overcome all those who oppose us, with the power of the Honorable and Life-giving Cross of the Lord, with the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, the prayers of the holy Apostles, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Andrew, for Christ's sake, holy fool, St. the prophet Elijah and all the holy great martyrs: St. Martyrs Nikita and Eustathius, and all our venerable fathers, who have pleased God from time immemorial, and all the holy powers of heaven.

However, in the church tradition, such a petition can only be addressed to the Lord! One gets the impression that in the mind of the subject of prayer, Archangel Michael takes the place of God. Bishop Evlogii (Gutchenko) of Sumy remarks: “In this prayer, unknown composers ascribe almost divine dignity to the Archangel Michael, the Mother of God and saints pray to him. Orthodox doctrine places the Mother of God above the Cherubim and Seraphim and all the Heavenly Forces. The Mother of God, the holy archangels and angels and saints of God make their prayer for us not before the Archangel Michael, but before the Lord God. Thus, in the "Prayer to the Archangel Michael, the Terrible Governor of the Heavenly Forces" there is a frank distortion of the teachings of the Church.

Unlike apocryphal texts, church doctrine does not allow any confusion of angels with the Lord - the Creator of angels.

In the popular environment, the functions of the amulet were endowed not only with the “Prayer to the Archangel Michael, the Terrible Governor of the Heavenly Forces”, but also other apocryphal texts, for example, “The Dream of the Virgin”: “Who will read this dream three times a day, keep it on the head and wear it clean , that person will receive salvation from God ”; “And whoever carries it with him on his way, that person in every way will not be touched by the devil, nor by an evil person, or even an unclean spirit. Sometimes the following notes are made to the text of the “Prayer to the Archangel Michael, the Terrible Governor of the Heavenly Forces”: “This prayer is written on the porch of the Archangel Michael in Moscow, also called the Chudov Monastery”; “This prayer was written on the porch of the Church of the Archangel Michael in Moscow, in the Kremlin, in the Miracle Monastery, which was blown up shortly after the October Revolution.”

There are no reliable sources that could confirm the truth of this version of the origin of prayer. Here we are dealing with the desire of the creators and distributors of apocryphal works to inspire confidence in dubious texts. For example, a reference to the name of a holy ascetic should give the apocrypha more weight in the eyes of readers. "Cyprian's Prayer", for example, is associated with the name schmch. Cyprian, Bishop of Antioch of Pisidia (Comm. 2/15 Oct.), one of the editions of the apocryphal "Tale of the Twelve Fridays" - with the name schmch. Clement, Pope of Rome, the “Prayer of Detention” is attributed to the origin from the collection of prayers of the Athos elder Pansofius. An attempt to connect the origin of the “Prayer to the Archangel Michael, the Terrible Governor of the Heavenly Forces” with the Miracle Monastery is probably explained by the fact that this monastery was founded by St. at the temple consecrated in the name of the Miracle of the Archangel Michael in Khonekh.

Stories about the miraculous appearance of the text and about its magical power are also found in the so-called "magic letters". This type of sacred text includes "holy", "heavenly" letters and "letters of happiness". In those lists of "Prayers to the Archangel Michael, the Terrible Governor of the Heavenly Forces", which were distributed in the XVI - early. The origin of the daily prayer to the archangel Michael

Such is the veneration that receives in the bosom in this edition - this is a translation of one folk prayer, which comes from the peasant environment of the 16th century.

There is, however, a version that the original text of this prayer served as the final prayer of the canon to the terrible angel governor, written by Tsar Ivan the Terrible under the name Parthenius the Ugly. Not everyone agrees with this. Some historians point out that this text, which mentions the Archangel Michael, is a Catholic prayer, translated into after a significant revision for the purpose of orthodoxy. An indirect argument for this is that a list of this prayer was discovered, which did not occur later than the middle of the 16th century.

The cult of the Archangel Michael: from prayer to conspiracy

It should be noted that the role that the Archangel Michael played in Russian society is a very strong protection against all sorts of enemies and misfortunes. This led to a rapid transformation in the popular consciousness of the actual prayer practice into the practice of conspiracies. Therefore, very often texts that mention the Archangel Michael (prayer for every day is no exception here) were included not only in prayer books and liturgical books, but also in lists of various conspiracies and spells. Such things have always been popular in Rus', despite direct condemnation from the church. In fact, Orthodoxy and folk magic harmoniously coexisted among the people, complementing each other and stimulating cultural development. For example, not without the influence of village healers and healers, Archangel Michael acquired his influence on church piety. The very strong protection that he provided to those who believed in his strength made him one of the favorite characters of near-church folklore. Thus, he acquired a special position among other characters of the angelic world, who are revered in the Orthodox Church.

Some lists of this prayer are accompanied by postscripts. Among other things, they say that the person who reads this prayer on the day of its reading will escape the temptations of the devil, evil spirits, insults of enemies and will have great joy in his heart and soul. And if a person dies on the day on which he reads this prayer, then his soul will be guaranteed to be saved and freed from hell.

Of course, this is far from an Orthodox interpretation of prayer, since in the church personal piety, that is, what is called life in Christ, is at the forefront. If security, joy, and even the salvation of the soul are guaranteed only by the daily reading of this prayer, then what is the point in such piety and in general in the church itself and its sacraments?

Unfortunately, this kind of superstitious attitude towards the components of the Christian life is not uncommon in the churchyard, especially among the laity. However, the approach that postulates the self-acting power of this or that text is completely alien to genuine Christian spirituality.

Modern Prayers to the Archangel Michael

Those variants of prayer to the Archangel Michael, which are widespread today, differ little from each other. Most often, discrepancies are caused by errors in translations and attempts to bring the Slavic text closer to All differences, thus, end in differences in endings and interchangeable synonyms.

Prayer for the President

In the last few years, one of the variants of prayer began to contact the President of Russia, whose personal patron for some reason is considered the Archangel Michael. Prayer for every day for the president to the heavenly commander is distributed to temples and monasteries, although it does not have official approval and blessing.

This edition indicates the surname and name of the current President of Russia Vladimir Putin. For example: “Lord God, the great Tsar, who has no beginning, send, O Almighty, your Archangel Michael to help your servant Vladimir.”

Responsibilities of Michael (archangel)

It is no secret that in the church tradition there is a kind of division of labor between the saints. That is, each saint is the patron of one or another sphere of human life. This tradition did not bypass the angelic forces. Archangel Michael is also involved in it. Who is the patron of this commander of the heavenly host? Of course, this is a military estate and everything related to it - the army, the military industry, etc. But first of all, Archangel Michael is the patron of trade and business. Therefore, below we will give a translation of the corresponding prayer, which is read by believing entrepreneurs who wish to enlist the support of the great archangel in their earthly affairs. On the other hand, such a division of duties is a rather conventional thing in Christianity and, in essence, alien to it. In fact, any saint can pray for anything. The same principle applies to angelic forces, among which the Archangel Michael is no exception. Beadwork, cycling, construction, health, marriage, raising children - all this can be prayed to this servant of God.

The patron saint of trade, the archangel Michael: a prayer for every day for trade

Oh, the great archangel of God Michael! Church tradition tells that the head of the angels is the main enemy of Satan and all fallen spirits. Itself bears the imprint of this ancient apocryphal legend, according to which the devil was once a bright angel and even the right hand of God named Dennitsa. However, he became proud, envious of the man whom God exalted before the angels. Pride led Dennitsa to rebel against the Almighty.
